Rotary kiln calcination temperature range for kaolin and clay minerals
1.Product Introduction Calcination Rotary Kiln
The Rotary Kiln is the core equipment utilized for the calcination of kaolin and various clay minerals. It facilitates critical physicochemical changes—including mineral dehydration, decarbonization, and phase transformation—through high-temperature thermal treatment. The equipment features an inclined installation and rotates slowly to ensure uniform heating and continuous movement of the material, enabling the conversion of raw minerals into high-performance calcined products. It is widely applicable for the industrial processing of coal-series kaolin, low-grade clay, and other raw materials.
2.Application Calcination Rotary Kiln
Paper Industry: Calcined kaolin serves as a high-quality filler and coating material, partially replacing titanium dioxide to enhance paper whiteness, smoothness, and printability.
Ceramic Manufacturing: Products calcined at medium-to-high temperatures are rich in mullite, used to produce high-strength, heat-resistant domestic porcelain, sanitary ware, and technical ceramics.
Refractory Materials: Kaolin calcined above 1300°C exhibits excellent thermal stability and mechanical strength, making it ideal for refractory bricks and kiln furniture used in metallurgy and glass industries.
Coatings & Rubber: Acts as a functional filler to improve opacity, rheology, and wear resistance.
Environmental & Resource Recovery: Supports the synergistic calcination of solid wastes like sludge and fly ash, facilitating resource regeneration.
3.Working Principle Calcination Rotary Kiln
1.Preheating Stage (Ambient – 550°C): Upon entering the kiln tail, the material undergoes physical dehydration. Free water and interlayer water are removed to prevent fragmenting or bursting in later stages.
2. Dehydroxylation Stage (550 – 800°C): A dehydroxylation reaction occurs in the kaolinite, which loses structural hydroxyl groups and transforms into amorphous metakaolin. This stage yields high-activity products with excellent pozzolanic properties.
3. Phase Transformation Stage (>900°C):
• Around 925°C, the silicon-aluminum spinel phase begins to form.
• Above 1100°C, the material gradually generates mullite and cristobalite, significantly enhancing refractoriness and mechanical properties.
4. Cooling & Collection: Calcined material is discharged from the kiln head and rapidly cooled to fix the crystalline phase and maintain activity before being collected as the final product.
