Wet vs Dry Magnetic Separation Separator
1.Product Introduction Magnetic Separator
Magnetic separation technology is a physical method that utilizes the magnetic differences between substances for separation. It is widely applied in mining, recycling, and industrial purification. Based on the state of the material being processed, magnetic separation is categorized into two primary types: Wet Magnetic Separation and Dry Magnetic Separation.
Wet Magnetic Separation: Refers to the magnetic separation process conducted in a slurry state (a mixture of material and water). The material is suspended and transported by water flow through a magnetic field. Magnetic particles are adsorbed and separated under the combined action of magnetic force, gravity, and fluid dynamics.
Dry Magnetic Separation: Refers to the magnetic separation process conducted while the material is completely dry. Materials pass through the magnetic field in the air, and magnetic particles are adsorbed and separated primarily by magnetic force without the use of any liquid media.
2.Application Magnetic Separator
Wet Magnetic Separation Applications: Ideal for processing ores with high moisture content, fine particle size, or a tendency to slime. In the mining industry, it is commonly used for fine-grained iron ores (such as magnetite and hematite), beach placers (separating ilmenite, zircon, etc.), and scenarios requiring high-precision sorting. Furthermore, it is widely utilized for recovering magnetic impurities from industrial wastewater, purifying food and pharmaceutical raw materials, and reclaiming grinding media.
Dry Magnetic Separation Applications: Best suited for materials with low moisture content and coarse particle size. In mining, it is particularly advantageous for sorting iron, manganese, and tungsten ores in arid or water-scarce regions. It is also frequently used for pre-tailing (rejecting waste rock) to increase the grade of feed entering the grinding mill, as well as for final cleaning after materials have been dried.
3.Working Principle Magnetic Separator
The ore pulp is fed into the equipment's tank. Under the influence of the magnetic field, magnetic mineral particles undergo magnetic aggregation, forming "magnetic clusters" or "magnetic chains," which are then adsorbed onto the surface of a rotating magnetic drum. As the drum rotates, these clusters are carried away from the pulp stream. Simultaneously, the alternating magnetic poles produce a "magnetic stirring" effect that strips away any non-magnetic gangue minerals trapped within. Finally, the magnetic substances are collected as concentrate, while the non-magnetic substances are discharged as tailings.
Dry material is conveyed to the magnetic field zone (such as near a magnetic roller or drum). Magnetic mineral particles are attracted by the magnetic force and adsorbed onto the magnetic pole surface, moving away from the original material stream as the equipment operates. Non-magnetic or weakly magnetic particles, being unaffected or minimally affected by the magnetic force, fall along their original trajectory due to gravity or inertia, thereby achieving separation.
